eading virologist Dr Ian Lipkin said that, ultimately, the route out of the coronavirus pandemic, that the world is experiencing globally, is a vaccine.
Ian Lipkin, who consulted on the plague movie Contagion, spoke exclusively with India Today News Director Rahul Kanwal and shared his views on how, according to him, is India doing in a global comparison in the fight against coronavirus.
“The problem is that India has a lot of people who are beginning to push back against the government saying I need food, I need this, I need all sorts of things to return to normalcy etc. We have to find some way to in which we can make it possible for people to live, particularly if they are closer to the poverty line until we have a vaccine” Lipkin said.
“Ultimately the route out of this problem, that the world is experiencing globally, is a vaccine,” Ian Lipkin added
“So what we are trying to do right now is minimise the damage,” he said.
“There is a lot of pain. It is very easy for me to sit in a house in the US. But there are poor people in this country too who need to be protected. So, it is very very difficult,” he said.
Ian Lipkin also shared what his current epidemiological models are telling him about the kinds of devastation the coronavirus will cause in times to come.
“The best-case scenario is that everyone does what they are supposed to do and everything flattens out and we begin to improve. Then we have a second wave that comes up in fall of this year,” Dr Ian Lipkin said.
To prevent such outbreaks from occurring again, Lipkin stressed on the need for changing our patterns of living as well as the development and cultivation of international systems of data sharing that help the world keep on top of such developments.
